How will music classes help my child succeed academically?

Increasingly, our students are pushed to excel academically and it’s easy to conclude that music participation is a luxury we can’t afford.  However, you may be surprised to learn that studies prove that middle and high school students who study instrumental music score significantly higher than their non-band/ orchestra peers on standardized tests, including college entrance exams.  Children who are active in school music programs get the unique opportunity to experience the intrinsic value of excellence.   Participation in band, orchestra or choir fosters creativity, teamwork and a sense of cooperation among students.  Furthermore, music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school with an impressive 66% admittance rate.  (Only 44% of biochemistry majors were admitted.)  And most importantly, music is a fun and rewarding activity that can be pursued for a lifetime.

What happens at an instrument try-on and how do I sign up?

All 5th grade parents will attend a 6th grade band and choir performance on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Afterwards the band and choir directors will visit each classroom and talk about the band and choir opportunities in middle school. Students will be given folders with all of this information, plus permission forms for band and choir. The permission forms are due by Tuesday, April 14th, 2026.

Tuesday, April 14th is instrument try-on day! Your your child will select three instruments to try, this is on the permission form your child turned in. One of our music try-on staff will show him/ her how to make sounds on the instruments so that everyone can see what instruments are easy and comfortable.  This is a great way to see what instrument “fits” your child well and gives him/ her the greatest chance at success!

The instrument try-on is a no pressure, fun way to explore the various instruments, meet the teachers and find out more about performing arts!   We do not eliminate children from participation based on the instrument try-on.  The time we spend with your child during the instrument try-on helps us to provide an appropriate placement for him or her.  We highly encourage parent participation in the process!

What kind of time commitment is involved?

All band classes meet during the regular school day. Because we know students are very busy, after school requirements are at a minimum. Our evening activities are limited to two nights per year when the students present their concerts. Dates for these events will be given to all students and parents the first week of school. Students in band are also responsible for practicing their instrument at home

Can I still participate in after school activities if I am in Band?

Yes!!!  Because  band rehearsals are during the school day, you can easily participate in after school activities without conflict.  A large percentage of our student musicians are active in other school groups.

When can I start?

Most of our students are very anxious to begin playing their instruments right away! We will start instruments in the first few weeks of school. Please be sure you have obtained an instrument by August at the latest!

What is the cost of participation?

The primary expense of band and orchestra participation is that of providing an instrument for your child.  Most parents will choose to rent an instrument at the start.  Rental fees for instruments are very affordable and apply toward ownership of the instruments.  More information can be found at www.paigesmusic.com
